Every stride, stop and battle on the ice starts with balance. The Extreme Hockey Balance Board trains it at home: stand on it, find your center and let your body work to stay there. The small adjustments your ankles, knees and hips make are the same ones that keep you strong on your edges and hard to knock off the puck.
Why hockey players train on a balance board
-
Better edges
Staying level works the small muscles in your feet, ankles and hips that hold an edge through a hard turn.
-
Hands and feet together
Stickhandle while you balance. Your hands and feet learn to work separately, like protecting the puck in traffic.
-
A few minutes a day
10–15 minutes at home is enough to feel the difference. Also works as a pre-game warm-up.
How to use it
Six steps to better balance
Start easy and build up. 10–15 minutes a day is plenty.
-
01
FIND YOUR BALANCE
Feet shoulder-width apart. Hold the board level for 30 seconds. Use a wall the first few times.
-
02
HOCKEY STANCE
Knees bent, chest up, weight on the balls of your feet. Hold it, then add small squats.
-
03
ADD A STICK
Once you are steady, stickhandle a ball or puck while you keep the board level.
-
04
MAKE IT HARDER
Narrow your stance, close your eyes for a few seconds or have a partner pass to you.
-
05
ONE FOOT
Shift your weight onto one foot and hold. Switch sides and repeat.
-
06
CORE WORK
Add squats, split squats and planks on the board. See the exercises below.
More than balance — core and leg strength
